Quick Answer

A high RTX 5090 hotspot is not automatically a radiator problem. Compare ambient, coolant, core, hotspot and memory temperatures, then inspect mounting pressure, paste spread and thermal-pad placement before changing the loop.

A bigger radiator cannot fix a poor contact patch

Recent forum threads often compare RTX 5090 block temperatures without recording the room or coolant temperature. That makes a useful diagnosis almost impossible. If the coolant is already close to room temperature but the GPU core or hotspot stays far above the coolant, the limiting step is more likely between the silicon and the cold plate than between the radiator and the air.

Start by recording five numbers after a sustained load: room temperature, coolant temperature, GPU core, GPU hotspot and memory temperature. Also record board power and pump speed. One screenshot without those conditions is not a benchmark.

Read the pattern, not one number

If coolant and GPU core both climb, look at radiator airflow, fan direction, pump operation and total heat load. If coolant stays controlled while the core-to-water or hotspot-to-core difference is unusually large, inspect block contact.

A full-cover block depends on the correct pad thickness and position. Pads that are too thick, doubled, misplaced or left on components the block does not contact can hold the cold plate away from the GPU. Uneven screw tightening can create the same problem.

What to inspect during the teardown

Photograph the board before lifting the block. Look at the thermal-paste imprint: it should show a consistent contact area rather than one untouched corner or a thick island. Check that every pad matches the installation diagram and that protective films were removed. Confirm standoffs and washers are in the correct locations.

Reassemble in the specified sequence, tightening gradually in a cross pattern where the manual requires it. Do not compensate for uncertainty by overtightening. The PCB and GPU package are expensive parts, not a clamp test.

Compare only after the test conditions match

After remounting, repeat the same workload at the same room temperature, fan curve and pump setting. The change in water-to-core and core-to-hotspot deltas is more informative than an absolute temperature posted by somebody using a different card, block, power limit and climate.

Questions & Answers

What hotspot-to-core difference is normal for an RTX 5090?

There is no universal number across every PCB, block and workload. Track your own change under repeatable conditions and investigate a sudden or unusually large delta.

Should thermal pads cover every visible component?

No. Install pads only where the current block instructions or contact surfaces require them. Extra pads can prevent proper GPU-core contact.

Will more radiator area lower a contact-related hotspot?

It may lower coolant temperature, but it will not correct uneven mounting, wrong pad thickness or poor paste contact.
